A smooth ball probably helps with this trick, as does a cushion between your feet. Expect it to hit the deck a few times before you get control. The trick works by gently easing the pressure on the ball until it starts to slide. However, you have to keep it even on both sides to get it smooth. There is no disgrace in using your chest to help out. After all, it's the look of the thing that matters. If you want to be picky, it is possible to do holding out from the chest, just that little bit harder.
