Or more specifically, using shadows to help smooth out 1b palm isolation.

I was working on this isolation with an opaque ball today when, just out of chance, I started my palmspin with a sharp shadow falling over half of the ball. I realised that this shadow served as an excellent focus point for me while working on this, because it made any deviation from that magical 'fixed point in space' starkly obvious (likewise, when your isolation 'works', it makes the iso look even more surreal, with the shadow slipping over your hand yet frozen in place over the ball... eep! slipping into the dark side of cj theory and spacy-ness... must... fight back... retain sanity...AAAAAAAAAH!)

*ehem*

I might experiment with different sorts of shadows (changing the light source, changing the location of the thing that creates the shadow, etc); currently I've been using a very simple edge of table + room lamp.

Has anyone else tried this? It's pretty cool.

I will sometimes use the shadow when attempting to walk around the 1-ball palm circle isolation. . .I noticed it one day when I was practicing outside.

I use shadows whenever I can. I try to rely on natural muscle memory, but the shadows help refine the moves. I use them alot when doing the point in space stuff as well. Miming type stuff

Something I've found that's somewhat akin to that, is using lazers. I've got this red lazer pointer that I started experimenting with. My clear 3.5" Has the tinest flecks of sparkle all the way though, so it shows the path of the lazer through it. I haven't found too many uses for it, but pulling it allong a line seems to fit in well, like in miming a box.

I use shadows all the time outside, but not the shadow on the ball itself, but the shadow of the ball on the ground. It ends up working about as well as watching yourself in a mirror. You can't notice movement along toward or away from the shadow, but outside that tends to be a really weird diagonal, so it's a pretty good judge of how isolated the ball is.
