my character in my current show is a tramp in the charlie chaplin/busterkeaton tradition.

a few weeks ago i arrived on stage to find that the sound system was broken and that there was a load of breadcrumbs lying arround on the floor, (damn clowns)
luckily i had a moment of clarity and found a broom, so i enacted a convoluted comedy sweeping improvisation. untill the problems were sorted out.

it went quite well, so i decided that it was just the thing that my character needed.

when i got back to my flat i remembered that i had a curling broom(genuine canadian), which i bought many moons ago from a charity shop, i'd been using it for sweeping the kitchen, which it always seemed too good for.

i started trying to remember the isolations that i saw jive(?) doing with a silver stick at the ejc last year.( he was also doing stuff with a two ended broom, but i remember the stick stuff better)

ive got a few basic moves, that are a bit enigma like, moving my hand(s) up and down the broom.
as well as the usual rotations around various points on the staff.

ive yet to work with it in front of a mirror, but i think that it realy benifits from "pops" to define the movements.

ive been trying some non isolation based stuff with it too, but if i need any more contact staff moves i've got two contacty staff spinners living in my house, i won't need to bother anybody here. Laughing

that's cool ewan Laughing

isolation and slidey translation stuff is all i do when i pick up a stick - which is once in a blue moon i admit.

not quite the same thing but vaguely ontopic, there are some beautiful ideas for isolation/translation with two sticks here: http://tinyurl.com/cws9r

watch that space for new 3 stick isolation/madness based manipulation (imagine the stuff you've been doing but holding two smaller sticks perpendicular to the broom)... Smile

though it sounds very intresting, I can't imagine doing iso with broomstick. I can think of mime stuff and staff like iso's, but I don't think you guys are talking about that.
So what are the ideas. Where can i expand on?

The general theory for stick isolations.

Hold a stick vertically at the bottom, a relaxed grip with the fingers. Notice that if you relax your grip, the stick will slide between the fingers and will move downwards. Practice this and develop a clean, controlled slide. It depends a lot of the type of stick.

Now... instead of keeping the hand fixed, move the hand upwards as the stick slides downwards. Voila! There is your isolation.

Like any isolation, lots of work is needed to get enough control to create a proper illusion, but this is the general idea for stick (and club Wink ) stuff.

Ryan

<and if you are bad-ass like Turbo, you can make the stick float without even touching it Wink )

Thank you Ryan.
Is there any movi material on this?
Is just a question from little ol Fuero
I'm kinda visual, but I think I know what you mean.
But how do you keep the stick from going down if you're hands are sliding up....
I'm going to give this a try.

There is a short film I think french that uses a camera technique in which the person looks like they are flying on the broom.
The film is only exposed when the person jumps in the air and into a flying position. Each frame the person moves forward a little. Then another frame is taken. They jump and jump and jump. Since only the frames in the air are shot the person seems to be flying thru the story.
It is really cool.
And no it has nothing to do with Turbo and the Broom.

Floating cane tricks. Theres some handling in that stuff to check out. Though gimmicked, it could add something. Well if its Ok for Turbo then...

i was at a gig today and i found a broom, it was pretty much perfect, nice and slippy,
the basic drop isolation works nicely.

i think i'll have to get a new broom. since the curling broom is a bit too grippy, maybe i'll wax it though.

and i still havent seen turbo and the broom.

This has nothing to do with isos and a broom, but, Ewen did you manage to see Pedro's street show in Edinburgh? He starts his show with 5 or so minutes of devilsticking technique with a full sized heavy, industrial-strenght broom. Friggen unbelievably tight.
